Abstract
Motivation plays an important role in determining students’ success in learning English, particularly in developing speaking skills. Students with high motivation tend to participate actively in speaking activities, demonstrate greater confidence, and persist when facing learning challenges. This study aimed to analyze students’ motivation in learning speaking skills among fourth-semester Class B English Education students at FKIP UIR. The study employed a descriptive qualitative approach involving sixteen students as participants. Data were collected through a questionnaire consisting of twenty statements and classroom observations. The questionnaire examined ten indicators of motivation, namely interest, participation, effort, persistence, self-confidence, positive attitude, enthusiasm, willingness to communicate, commitment to learning, and active engagement. The findings revealed that most students showed positive motivation toward learning speaking skills. The majority of participants agreed or strongly agreed with statements related to interest in speaking activities, commitment to improving speaking ability, willingness to communicate, and active classroom participation. However, several students still experienced challenges related to self-confidence and speaking anxiety when communicating in English. The study concludes that students generally possess a positive level of motivation in learning speaking skills, although supportive learning environments and communicative activities remain necessary to strengthen students’ confidence and participation.
