The use of college backpacks with relatively heavy loads over prolonged periods may cause discomfort and increase the risk of musculoskeletal disorders, particularly shoulder and back pain. This condition highlights the importance of developing ergonomic backpacks that consider both ergonomic principles and user requirements. This study aimed to develop an ergonomic college backpack design using the Quality Function Deployment (QFD) method to systematically translate user needs into technical product characteristics. The study employed a descriptive quantitative approach. Data were collected through observations, interviews, and questionnaires distributed to 50 respondents selected using a purposive sampling technique. The data were analyzed through the identification of the Voice of Customer (VOC), validity and reliability testing of the research instrument, and the development of the House of Quality (HOQ). The results revealed that the users' highest-priority requirements included reducing shoulder pressure, minimizing back pain, providing comfort during prolonged use, and incorporating ergonomic shoulder straps and back padding. The instrument testing indicated that all customer requirement attributes were valid and demonstrated excellent reliability, making them suitable as the basis for product development. Furthermore, the HOQ analysis identified the priority technical characteristics, including an optimized load distribution system, the use of lightweight yet durable materials, ergonomic cushioning, and backpack dimensions tailored to user characteristics. The implementation of the QFD method proved effective in supporting the systematic development of an ergonomic college backpack based on user needs, thereby enhancing user comfort and reducing the risk of back pain associated with prolonged backpack use.
