Abstract
This study aims to investigate the challenges faced by junior high school students in using video-based learning to improve their speaking skills. This research employed a qualitative descriptive design involving students who had experience with video-based speaking activities. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and document analysis, and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed three major challenges: linguistic, psychological, and technical. Linguistic challenges include limited vocabulary, pronunciation difficulties, and difficulty understanding fast speech. Psychological challenges involve anxiety, low confidence, and fear of making mistakes. Technical challenges include poor internet connection, limited device access, and low digital literacy. These challenges are interconnected and significantly affect students’ speaking development. In conclusion, video-based learning can support speaking skills when accompanied by proper instructional support, emotional encouragement, and technological readiness. Teachers are encouraged to provide scaffolding strategies, such as vocabulary support and the use of subtitles, to enhance learning effectiveness.
