EFEKTIVITAS METODE AERASI DAN KLORINASI TERHADAP PENURUNAN KADAR BESI (Fe) PADA AIR SUMUR GALI
Abstract
Excessive iron (Fe) concentrations in groundwater can cause aesthetic problems and operational disturbances in domestic water systems. This study aimed to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of aeration and chlorination in reducing iron concentrations in dug-well water in Koya Barat, Muara Tami District, Jayapura City. This quantitative field experiment used a pretest-posttest design. A total of 1,100 liters of well water was treated separately using an aeration pipe system and a 3-inch chlorinator containing chlorine tablets. Iron concentration was measured on-site before and after treatment using the Hanna HI3834 Iron Chemical Test Kit. The initial iron concentration was 2.50 mg/L. After treatment, the mean iron concentration was 1.18 mg/L for aeration, corresponding to a reported reduction of 52.80%, while chlorination reduced the mean concentration to 1.46 mg/L, corresponding to 41.60%. Aeration produced a greater reduction than chlorination under the operating conditions applied in this study. However, neither treatment reduced the measured iron concentration to the applicable Indonesian quality standard for water intended for hygiene and sanitation. The findings indicate that aeration can be considered a practical oxidation stage, but subsequent sedimentation and/or filtration is required to improve iron removal. Keywords
