PROFIL PENGGUNAAN OBAT PADA KASUS TRAVELLER’S DIARRHEA DI DAERAH WISATA PANTAI KEDUNGU

Abstract

Traveller’s diarrhea remains one of the most frequently encountered health problems among international tourists visiting tropical destinations. In Bali, this condition has the potential to reduce tourists’ comfort and disrupt travel activities. Information regarding medication use by tourists experiencing traveller’s diarrhea is still limited, particularly in coastal tourism destinations. Objective: This study aimed to explore the profile of medication use among tourists experiencing traveller’s diarrhea in the Kedungu Beach tourist area. Methods: A qualitative study with a phenomenological approach was conducted using in-depth interviews with foreign tourists who had experienced traveller’s diarrhea. Participants were selected using consecutive sampling according to predetermined inclusion criteria. Data were analysed through open coding, axial coding, and selective coding to identify major themes describing medication use behaviour. Results: Participants generally experienced symptoms within 24–48 hours after arrival, with watery diarrhea as the predominant complaint. Initial management included increasing fluid intake, resting, and self-medication. Antidiarrheal drugs, particularly Diagit and activated charcoal, were the medications most frequently used. Drug selection was influenced by pharmacists’ recommendations, previous experiences, and internet-based information. Two behavioural patterns emerged, namely prepared travellers and reactive travellers. Pharmacists played an important role in promoting rational medication use. Conclusion: Medication use among tourists with traveller’s diarrhea is influenced by individual experiences, accessibility of medicines, and pharmaceutical counselling. Strengthening pharmaceutical services in tourist destinations may improve rational self-medication practices.
