PERKEMBANGAN FORMULASI DAN KARAKTERISASI CANGKANG KAPSUL BERBASIS BAHAN ALAM SEBAGAI ALTERNATIF GELATIN

Abstract

This study aims to review the development of non-gelatin capsule shells based on natural polymers using a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method. Various scientific studies were analyzed to evaluate the potential of carrageenan, alginate, starch, pectin, and cellulose as alternative materials to gelatin. The results show that each polymer exhibits different characteristics in film-forming ability, mechanical strength, and disintegration time. Carrageenan shows strong gelation properties, cellulose provides structural strength, while starch and alginate offer advantages in raw material availability. However, no single polymer fully meets the ideal requirements of capsule shells. Therefore, a composite polymer approach is considered the most effective strategy for developing stable, functional, and sustainable non-gelatin capsules.
