POTENSI EKSTRAK UMBI RUMPUT TEKI (CYPERUS ROTUNDUS L.) SEBAGAI AGEN ANTIKANKER SERVIKS HELA: LITERATURE REVIEW
Abstract
Cancer remains a leading cause of mortality worldwide, with cervical cancer being the most common type in women. Most cases of cervical cancer are associated with persistent infection with Human Papillomavirus (HPV) types 16 and 18, which disrupt cell cycle regulation and inhibit apoptosis. Although chemotherapy is the primary treatment, its use is often accompanied by various side effects, prompting the development of new, safer anticancer agents. The use of natural ingredients is a promising approach due to their abundant availability and lower potential toxicity compared to conventional therapies. Purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus L.) contain various secondary metabolites suspected of having cytotoxic activity against cancer cells. This literature review aims to evaluate the potential of nutsedge tuber extract as a candidate for cervical anticancer agents based on published research results. The literature search was conducted using the Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method through Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and PubMed databases with the keywords "Cyperus rotundus," "anticancer," and "cervical cancer." The selected articles were national and international publications within the last ten years. The study results showed that C. rotundus extract was able to inhibit cancer cell proliferation, induce cell cycle arrest, increase oxidative stress, and trigger apoptosis, which are related to the content of bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, sesquiterpenoids, cyperotundone, caryophyllene oxide, and longiverbenone. Based on these findings, purple nutsedge have the potential to be developed as a natural cervical cancer agent. However, preclinical and clinical trials are still needed to ensure its effectiveness and safety before being used in humans. Keywords
