Abstract

The continuously growing construction sector in Indonesia drives innovations in stronger, more durable, and environmentally friendly concrete materials. This study aims to analyze the effect of epoxy resin variations at 0%, 2%, 4%, and 6% of the total binder on Polymer Cement Concrete (PCC) with 5% fly ash substitution regarding bond strength, development length, drying shrinkage, and carbonation. An experimental method was conducted using 20 cm cube specimens for bond strength and development length testing via a Universal Testing Machine (UTM), along with beam and cylinder specimens for drying shrinkage and carbonation tests up to 28 days of concrete age. The results showed that the bond strength values were 14.64 MPa, 18.04 MPa, 21.28 MPa, and 16.68 MPa, respectively, with development lengths of 77.75 mm, 63.93 mm, 53.86 mm, and 67.94 mm. Meanwhile, the addition of epoxy resin significantly reduced drying shrinkage from 317 to 283, 233, and 217 microstrain, and decreased carbonation depth from 8.81 mm to 6.77 mm, 4.62 mm, and 2.17 mm, respectively. This improvement in durability and microstructure density is attributed to the epoxy resin filling the concrete pores and the pozzolanic reaction of fly ash producing additional C-S-H. The 4% level emerged as the optimum epoxy resin variation for mechanical properties, yielding the highest bond strength and the lowest development length. Excessive use of epoxy (above 4%) was proven to disrupt the cement hydration process, thereby reducing bond strength. In conclusion, the use of up to 6% epoxy resin alongside 5% fly ash is highly effective in enhancing the microstructure density and durability of PCC, with 4% being the optimum level for structural performance.
