Abstract

This study aims to describe the phenomena of code-switching and code-mixing of the Malay regional language in the novel Kau, Aku, dan Sepucuk Angpau Merah by Tere Liye and to utilize the findings as the basis for developing a Bahasa Indonesia teaching module for tenth-grade senior high school students. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. The data source consisted of narrative texts and dialogues in the novel that contain instances of code-switching and code-mixing between Indonesian and the Malay language of Pontianak. Data were collected using reading and note-taking techniques, while data analysis involved data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate that the code-switching found in the novel is internal code-switching from Indonesian to the Malay regional language, influenced by the characters’ social background, communicative situations, and the reinforcement of cultural identity. Code-mixing occurs in various forms, including the insertion of Malay lexical items in the form of words, phrases, idioms, clauses, and reduplication within Indonesian utterances. The use of code-switching and code-mixing in the novel functions to strengthen character portrayal, create narrative realism, and represent the sociocultural background of the Malay Pontianak community. Based on these findings, a contextual and relevant Bahasa Indonesia teaching module on code-switching and code-mixing was developed in accordance with the learning outcomes for tenth-grade senior high school students. Therefore, this study is expected to contribute to sociolinguistic studies, the preservation of regional languages, and the development of Indonesian language and literature teaching.
