Abstract
Speaking is widely regarded as one of the most demanding skills for EFL learners, and presentation activities are commonly used in university classrooms to provide structured speaking practice. However, many students continue to experience low self-confidence when speaking English despite regular exposure to such activities. This study employed a qualitative descriptive design to investigate how presentation activities enhance students' self-confidence in speaking English in the EFL classroom at the Islamic University of Riau. Data were collected through a closed-ended questionnaire consisting of 15 items measured on a four-point Likert scale, distributed to 21 fourth-semester students of the English Education Department who had experienced English presentation activities. The questionnaire was developed based on four self-confidence factors identified in the literature: anxiety, shyness, fear of making mistakes, and lack of vocabulary. The findings show that nearly all students experienced nervousness, physical anxiety symptoms, shyness, and fear of mistakes during presentations, yet a substantial number also reported decreased anxiety and increased confidence after repeated presentation experience, positive peer feedback, constructive feedback from lecturers, and vocabulary preparation. These findings suggest that presentation activities, when carried out regularly and supported by a positive classroom environment, contribute meaningfully to building students' self-confidence in speaking English.
