Abstract
Spontaneous speaking is an important aspect of English communication because it requires students to respond directly without prior preparation. However, many students still experience difficulties when speaking English spontaneously during classroom interaction. This study aimed to explore the experiences and challenges of fourth-semester English students at Universitas Islam Riau in producing spontaneous English speaking. This study employed a qualitative narrative approach involving twenty students as participants. Data were collected through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The findings revealed that most students experienced difficulties in answering questions without preparation, expressing ideas immediately, and responding to unexpected questions. Speaking anxiety was identified as a major challenge, as many students reported feeling nervous, afraid of making mistakes, and lacking confidence when speaking English spontaneously. The study also found that students used various communication strategies, including gestures, repetition, code-switching, sentence simplification, and clarification requests, to maintain communication. The findings suggest that spontaneous English speaking is influenced by speaking anxiety, language proficiency, confidence, and communication strategies. Therefore, supportive classroom interaction and communicative speaking activities are important to help students improve their spontaneous speaking ability.
