Abstract
The rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) has significantly influenced educational practices, particularly through the use of ChatGPT. Many students utilize ChatGPT to answer questions, complete assignments, translate texts, and generate ideas quickly. However, excessive dependence on AI-generated responses may affect students’ critical thinking skills. This study aimed to explore how the use of ChatGPT hinders students’ critical thinking among fourth-semester students of the English Language Education Study Program at Universitas Islam Riau. This study employed a qualitative research approach with a narrative design. The data were collected through a close-ended questionnaire consisting of 15 statements distributed to 20 fourth-semester students. The questionnaire covered three aspects of critical thinking, namely critical evaluation, independent thinking, and reflective thinking. The findings revealed that most students agreed that they verify information obtained from ChatGPT, use their own reasoning, and reflect on the impact of AI on their learning process. The results indicate that students still demonstrate critical evaluation, independent thinking, and reflective thinking while using ChatGPT in academic activities. Therefore, ChatGPT does not necessarily hinder students’ critical thinking when it is used responsibly and accompanied by critical evaluation.
