Abstract

Global trade policies have a significant impact on the dynamics of agricultural imports and the competitiveness of domestic farmers in Malaysia. The purpose of this study is to assess the trade policies implemented by the Malaysian agricultural sector and examine their impact on the conditions of local farmers. Using a policy analysis approach based on literature and official documents, this study finds that trade liberalization has a dual effect: on the one hand, it increases food availability, but on the other hand, it reduces the competitiveness of local farmers due to price competition from imported products. Without adequate domestic production capacity, market openness could risk increasing the independence of the agricultural sector in Malaysia. This study recommends the need for a more balanced policy adjustment between global market opening and protection for domestic farmers.
