Abstract
This study explores how Generation Z engages in self-disclosure while communicating with Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbots. Beyond academic assistance, many young users treat chatbots as a personal communication space to express feelings, seek validation, and discuss issues they find difficult to share with others. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were gathered through in-depth interviews and documentation involving five main informants from Generation Z and one key informant, a clinical psychologist, then analyzed following the Miles and Huberman model. The findings show that self-disclosure develops gradually through three stages: general exploration, personalization, and deep openness, driven by perceived safety, non-judgmental responses, speed, and conversational control. Self-disclosure appears across five dimensions: amount, valence, honesty, intent, and intimacy, and is grounded in Social Penetration Theory. However, the study also identifies risks related to privacy awareness and emotional dependence on AI responses. It concludes that chatbot AI functions as a safe alternative communication space for Generation Z, yet cannot fully replace warm interpersonal relationships or professional psychological support.References
