Abstract

Social media addiction is becoming an increasingly worrying problem among college students as digital engagement increases in daily life. This study aims to determine the level of self-control, social media addiction, and the relationship between the two in sixth-semester students of the Psychology Study Program at Bhayangkara University, Jakarta Raya. The study used a quantitative correlational method with 107 respondents selected through quota sampling techniques from a population of 219 college students aged 18 to 25 who use social media at least two hours per day. Self-control was measured using the Brief Self-Control Scale and social media addiction was measured using the Social Media Addiction Scale Student Form. Data analysis was performed using Pearson Product Moment correlation preceded by normality and linearity tests. The results showed a significant negative relationship between self-control and social media addiction with a correlation coefficient of -0.495 and a significance value below 0.001. This indicates that students with higher self-control tend to have lower levels of social media addiction. The majority of students fall into the category of high social media addiction and high self-control simultaneously, indicating that even students with relatively good self-regulation are still vulnerable to excessive social media use due to the features of digital platforms. This finding underscores the importance of developing intervention programs to improve self-control on campus to support student psychological well-being.
