Abstract
Social media has become an inseparable part of the lives of teenagers, including junior high school students. The ease of access and various attractive features offered by social media make students tend to spend a lot of time accessing it, potentially diverting their attention from the learning process. This study aims to understand the intensity of social media use among students of SMP X in Bekasi City. This study uses a quantitative method with a descriptive approach. The research sample consisted of 112 students selected using a non-probability sampling technique with a purposive sampling approach. Data collection was conducted thru a questionnaire on the intensity of social media use, which was structured based on four aspects: duration, frequency, attention, and appreciation. The results of the validity and reliability tests indicate that the research instrument is suitable for use with a very high reliability level. The results of the descriptive analysis show an empirical mean value of 85.31 with a standard deviation of 22.150. Based on the categorization results, the majority of respondents fall into the moderate category (50.9%), followed by the high category (42.0%), and the low category (7.1%). Based on the type of platform used, TikTok is the most used social media by the respondents. The results of this study indicate that the intensity of social media use among X junior high school students is generally in the moderate category, but the proportion of students with high intensity is also quite significant. Therefore, attention is needed from the school, parents, and the students themselves in managing social media use so that it does not disrupt the learning process.References
