Abstract

This study aims to identify the forms of bullying and analyze the psychological impacts experienced by the main character, Jude Duarte, in The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method with a literary psychology approach and Karen Horney’s social psychoanalytic theory. The data were collected through library research using note-taking and close reading techniques on dialogues, monologues, and narrative events relevant to the research focus. The findings reveal that Jude experiences various forms of bullying, such as verbal humiliation, intimidation, threats, and discriminatory treatment due to her position as a human in the Faerie world. These repeated bullying experiences lead to anxiety, insecurity, and basic hostility, which later develop into neurotic needs for power, control, and domination as defense mechanisms. This study concludes that experiences of bullying play an important role in shaping Jude’s psychological dynamics, particularly in the development of her tendency to move against people as a way to gain a sense of security and avoid being in a vulnerable position.
