Abstract
Academic communication among Indonesian university students increasingly draws on English vocabulary, yet sociolinguistic studies that examine word-level usage within academic service communication (Academic Service Nodes, ASN) remain scarce. This study identified the common English words that most frequently appeared in everyday academic digital communication among Indonesian students and described how their occurrence was distributed across age, educational background, and social contact. A descriptive qualitative design with a sociolinguistic approach was applied. Seventeen participants aged 20–23 were selected purposively. Data were screenshots of WhatsApp conversations and Instagram direct messages, gathered through non-participant observation and documentation and analysed with the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. Twenty data entries yielded 11 common English words. Deadline was the most frequent (6 occurrences; 30%), followed by today (3), submit (2), and upload (2); the other seven words each occurred once. Seventeen entries (85%) came from WhatsApp and three (15%) from Instagram. The words appeared in every age group, educational background, and type of social contact, and mostly served as terms for academic tasks and assessment (12 of 20 entries). Because the evidence is descriptive and small in scale, the findings show patterns of occurrence rather than a causal influence of social factors. Future studies should use larger corpora and comparative designs.
