Abstract

Preoperative anxiety is a common psychological response experienced by patients before surgery, which if left unmanaged can trigger increased blood pressure, pulse rates, sleep disturbances, and diminished overall patient readiness. Safe and effective non-pharmacological management is urgently required to address this condition in clinical settings. This study aims to determine the effect of implementing guided imagery relaxation techniques on reducing anxiety levels in preoperative patients at the Cery Room of RSUD Madani, Central Sulawesi Province. The method employed a case study design with a nursing care approach involving five preoperative patients experiencing anxiety. The subjects' anxiety levels were measured using the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS) before and after the intervention, with the guided imagery intervention administered for 10 to 15 minutes in a calm environment. The implementation results demonstrated a consistent decrease in anxiety levels across all research subjects, shifting from moderate and severe categories to mild. This reduction was also accompanied by decreased restlessness, improved sleep quality, enhanced feelings of calmness, and stabilized vital signs. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the application of guided imagery relaxation is proven effective in reducing preoperative anxiety and can be integrated as part of independent nursing interventions to enhance patient psychological readiness.
