Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disease that requires appropriate dietary management through the implementation of the 3J diet, which includes food type, portion size, and meal schedule. Elderly patients' knowledge of the 3J diet plays an important role in supporting diabetes management. This study aimed to describe the level of knowledge among elderly patients with diabetes mellitus regarding the 3J diet in Sawotratap Village, Gedangan District, Sidoarjo Regency. This study employed a quantitative descriptive design. The study population consisted of 70 elderly patients with diabetes mellitus, and 60 respondents were selected using an accidental sampling technique. The study variable was the level of knowledge regarding the 3J diet. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed descriptively using frequency and percentage distributions. The results showed that 25 respondents (35.7%) had good knowledge, 24 respondents (34.3%) had poor knowledge, and 21 respondents (30.0%) had moderate knowledge regarding the 3J diet. Most respondents were young older adults (70.0%) and female (67.1%). The level of knowledge regarding the 3J diet among elderly patients with diabetes mellitus varied, as moderate and poor levels of knowledge were still identified. Therefore, healthcare professionals should provide continuous health education tailored to the characteristics of older adults to improve their understanding of the 3J diet as part of diabetes mellitus management.
