Abstract
This study aims to determine the relationship between workload and work motivation among Generation Z employees. As a generation that increasingly dominates the workforce and prioritizes self-actualization as well as work-life balance, their motivation is highly vulnerable to excessive workload and limited control over work. This phenomenon becomes particularly crucial in the distribution industry, where the fast-paced work environment often creates physical and mental pressure that may hinder employees’ performance. The research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational study design. The sampling technique used was saturated sampling, involving 112 Generation Z employees working at Distribution Company X. This study utilized two measurement instruments: the Work Motivation Scale developed by Gagné and the Workload Scale developed by Analalaki. The results revealed a significant and strong negative relationship between workload and work motivation (r = −0.65 and p < 0.05). The findings indicate that the lower the perceived workload, the higher the employees’ work motivation. Most employees perceived their workload as relatively low, which became a major factor contributing to high work motivation. A less demanding work environment was proven effective in maintaining employees’ enthusiasm and motivation in carrying out their responsibilities. The low workload was influenced by the predominance of male employees in operational positions (helpers and drivers) who possessed adequate physical capacity, allowing physical, time-related, and mental demands to remain within tolerable limits. This non-pressuring work condition provided Generation Z employees with the opportunity to achieve intrinsic motivation, in which they consciously aligned work goals with personal values and demonstrated strong enthusiasm to contribute to the companyReferences
