Abstract

Elementary school students in the concrete operational stage of development need basic reading skills in English. However, there are spelling differences between the foreign language and the students’ native language, which cause difficulties in the correct pronunciation and articulation of words. The phonics method is designed to help students logically understand the relationship between the visual form of letter symbols and their phonetic representations. By using teaching aids to make abstract language sounds more concrete, the learning process is designed to be interactive and student-centered. Students are taught various skills, such as identifying the sounds of individual letters, articulating short vowels, blending phonemes (blending words), and understanding the “magic e” rule for long vowels. The fun nature of the learning experience can boost students’ enthusiasm, motivation, and independence in reading simple texts. As a result, students no longer feel confused when distinguishing between similar letter sounds and are able to pronounce vocabulary words correctly.
