Abstract
Research on homicide contagion remains fragmented because studies of viral attention, social networks, and urban clustering use different units of analysis and often treat temporal or spatial concentration as evidence of transmission. This study aims to clarify how homicide contagion is measured across digital and urban space and to determine when post-event clustering can reasonably be distinguished from transmission. A systematic literature review followed by narrative synthesis was conducted on empirical studies published between January 2000 and June 2026 that examined temporal, relational, or spatial dependence after lethal violence. The findings show that digital-temporal evidence is dominated by mass shooting research and more often identifies self-excitation than directly observed exposure. Network studies reveal concentrated gunshot victimization within particular relationships, although fatal and nonfatal outcomes are frequently combined and homophily remains difficult to exclude. Spatial studies provide more direct homicide outcomes, but near-repeat patterns may still reflect place persistence rather than event dependence. These results support cross-space coupling as a conditional framework: digital attention widens visibility, while social networks and urban locations shape where and for whom risk becomes concentrated. Homicide contagion is therefore better understood as an event-dependent change in lethal risk that moves through identifiable exposure pathways and cannot be sufficiently explained by pre-existing risk, common shocks, homophily, or persistent place-based vulnerability.
