PEMAKNAAN KOMUNIKASI NONVERBAL DALAM PEMBENTUKAN HUBUNGAN PERSAHABATAN KARAKTER HICCUP DAN TOOTHLESS PADA FILM HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON

Abstract

Nonverbal communication plays a crucial role in building interpersonal relationships, including friendships. The film How to Train Your Dragon (2025) depicts the development of a friendship between Hiccup and Toothless, a relationship dominated by nonverbal communication. This study aims to analyze the meaning of nonverbal communication in the formation of friendship between the two characters using Roland Barthes’ semiotic analysis. This study employs a descriptive qualitative methodology with observation and documentation techniques. The results indicate that the relationship between Hiccup and Toothless develops through four stages: initial interaction, the building of trust, touch as a symbol of acceptance, and the formation of a friendship. The forms of nonverbal communication identified include body language, eye contact, facial expressions, vocalizations, touch, and proxemics. Through Roland Barthes’s semiotic approach, this nonverbal communication represents empathy, trust, acceptance, care, loyalty, and support, which form the basis for the friendship between Hiccup and Toothless.
