Abstract

The Correctional Institution (Lapas) Class IIB Wonosari has been developing food security and independence-coaching programs for inmates, one of which involves processing kitchen and agricultural organic waste using a 2-in-1 composter. Field observation showed that the composter had been used without a documented Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), causing inconsistent handling among officers and inmates and reducing the quality of the resulting compost. This community service program aimed to develop, socialize, and implement an operational SOP for the 2-in-1 composter as a reference for waste sorting, chopping, bio-activator dosing, fermentation, and harvesting of liquid and solid compost. The method combined field observation, coordination with coaching officers, SOP drafting, visual media development, socialization, implementation, and monitoring-evaluation. Achievement was measured qualitatively through user compliance with each SOP stage and the consistency of the compost produced. The results show that a documented SOP was successfully compiled and disseminated through posters placed at the composting area, followed by supervised implementation involving officers and inmates. The SOP standardized every processing stage, improved work safety and cleanliness, and produced organic fertilizer that supports the institution's food security cultivation activities. The program also enhanced inmates' practical skills in organic-waste management as part of independence coaching. In conclusion, a clear and well-socialized operational SOP is essential to ensure uniform, safe, and sustainable composting practices, and it contributes both to environmental management and to inmates' readiness for reintegration into society.
