Abstract

This study explore hedges expression in Marnia Lazreg’s “Questioning the Veil” (2009). This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach based on evasive expressions as defined by Salager-Meyer (1994) and Ken Hyland’s (2005) model of interactional metadiscourse. The empirical findings reveal 100 instances of hedging expressions, namely Shields (41), Approximators (35), Compound Hedges (13), and Emotionally-Charged Intensifiers (11). Pragmatically, this tool sharpens the author’s critical ability to mediate the conflict between socio-religious pressures and women’s individual autonomy. Structurally, the interaction between “Attitude” and “Engagement” creates a persuasive dialogic space for readers. This study concludes that hedging functions as a strategy to advocate for women’s autonomy without provoking radical resistance
