DISCOURSE CLASSIFICATION IN HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS (20th ANNIVERSARY RAVENCLAW EDITION)
Main Article Content
Abstract
This study analyzes the classification of discourse in the novel Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Ravenclaw 20th Anniversary Edition) by J. K. Rowling using James Paul Gee’s discourse analysis framework. This study aims to identify how discourse is classified based on its social functions and to examine how language constructs meaning through the concepts of “saying,” “doing,” and “being.” This study employs a qualitative descriptive method. Data were collected from dialogues and narrative sections within the novel and analyzed using Gee’s discourse analysis approach. The findings indicate that discourse in the novel functions not only as a means of communication but also as a tool for constructing identity, forging relationships, and expressing power. The analysis reveals that language plays a crucial role in shaping social meaning and interactions among the characters. Therefore, the classification of discourse in the novel reflects various social functions that contribute to the development of the story and the representation of social reality within the wizarding world.
